Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy uses guided relaxation and focused attention to help an individual achieve a trance-like state in which they can better access their subconscious mind and address specific issues. I can help with a variety of issues, including the following:

Anxiety & Stress

This can be generalised, with an individual feeling overwhelmed in life, or specific to certain events or triggers.

Weight Management

Our physical health is often a reflection of our mental wellbeing. Techniques are focussed on improving resilience, to enable better choices.

Pain Management

Our mental state and physical condition are intrinsically linked. A negative mental state can worsen the impact of chronic pain from conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia.

Phobias

Our learned behaviours (in childhood or triggered by events or situations) can lead to irrational fears or phobias, which can be remedied by applying a different perspective.

Confidence and Self-Esteem

A lack of confidence or self-esteem often prevents us from believing that we are entitled or capable of the pursuit of happiness. Having these is often key to progress and success.

Insomnia

Sleep is fundamental to life. Issues such as those listed here, can prevent us from getting the sleep we need. Which, in turn, can make the issues worse, trapping us in a vicious cycle.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Our mental state and our digestive system are deeply connected. This brain-gut connection can become broken, and make our system function poorly as a result.

Smoking Cessation

Nicotine is one of the prevalent addictive substances, and is a habit-forming drug that is difficult to leave consciously. Successful work on this has come form addressing the issue on both a conscious and subconscious level.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Hypnosis is a state of focussed attention which allows the conscious mind to relax so that the subconscious can be more receptive to suggestions and easily accepting of change.

It is a natural state that we all go into at times when we are daydreaming or lost in thought, or sometimes even when we are reading a good book. It helps achieve improved focus and concentration.

Solution focussed hypnotherapy (SFH) is a kind of talking therapy that combines the use of psychotherapy with hypnosis. As a well-researched and modern approach to therapy, SFH centres around what the client wants to achieve (the solution) rather than what prompted them to seek help (the problem).

An initial consultation is free and takes about an hour. It is a great way to discuss the reason why you are seeking support, your goals, and your hopes from the future. It is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions about the process, so you are well informed. It also involves:

  • Gathering general information, a brief medical history or conditions that you might feel are relevant and details that can help assess the best course of action for you.
  • Discussion of how the brain works and how we experience emotions in the way we do, how these can affect us and our habits and what we can do to change them.
  • Discussion around what trance is and how it can help you and what you can expect from the sessions; and
  • An indication of the number of sessions that may be required depending on your circumstances.

A solution focussed hypnotherapy session starts with talking about what went well during the week and any positive changes you may have made or noticed since your last session. This is followed by a brief discussion about the brain and how it relates to your experiences. We then use elements from different modalities such as Solution Focussed Brief Therapy (SFBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) to help you find solutions to move forward in a positive way.

After this, we have a hypnosis session where you are guided into a deep state of relaxation and your mind can focus on, process, and reflect on things that were discussed in the session.

There is no “mind control” in hypnosis. In fact, when in a state of trance, your attention is detached from your immediate surroundings and more towards “inner experiences”  such a feelings, thoughts, behaviours, emotions and sensations. No one can make you do things you don’t want to do. If the suggestion made to the mind is inappropriate, the mind will ignore it or bring you out of trance.

Typically, solution focussed hypnotherapy takes about eight to twelve sessions to help you achieve your specific goals, but number of sessions can vary depending on individual case and client motivation.

Smoking cessation is a single session which can last up to 2 hours.

Specific phobias can generally be resolved within 4 sessions including the initial consultation.
